mcn five on friday

It’s May! The hot months of summer are just around the corner, but in many parts of the country, the mild late spring days still prevail. That’s why May is National Bike Month -- a time to leave the car keys at home and pedal to work and school. Biking isn’t just good for your health; it is a choice for cleaner air in your community and a vote for a healthier planet. More and more people are choosing two wheels over four; check out http://bikeleague.org/bikemonth to learn more. While you enjoy your first May weekend, check out a few reads on migrant justice and health, recommended by MCN staff.

1. Emily, Health Network Intern, shared this NPR article on how researchers are hoping that citizen scientists can improve TB testing.

2. Claire, Writer and Editor, forwarded on this Mother Jones article on a study that found that California tomato pickers can’t afford the tomatoes they pick.

3. Claire also offered this article about the US government grants to help resettle the first American climate migrants

4. Christine, Environmental and Occupational Health Intern, offered up this Fusion article, showing what it looked like when the US-Mexico border opened for three minutes.

5. Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, shared the federal ruling in which farm labor contractor Global Horizons must pay the Thai farmworkers it abused $7,658,500.

Have a safe and healthy weekend -- and don’t forget to wear your bike helmet!
