We at Migrant Clinicians Network are horrified and saddened by the recent mass shooting in which 11 people were killed in Pittsburgh. Hate of the “other” has once again resulted in a devastating act of terror. As clinicians serving the poor and migrants, we are gravely concerned when the national discourse tolerates hatred toward another group of people. Racism and intolerance are the fruits of injustice in our society.  Drawing deeply on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

We call on our leaders to denounce this act and the many others the nation has experienced recently, in the strongest of terms, and to take action on concrete measures to reduce hate and demonstrate the United States’ dedication to embracing and caring for all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or documentation status.
