Current News is our focus for March and April. The Surveillance Summary for Acute Viral Hepatitis released in March indicates declining rates of all three common types of Hepatitis, A, B. and C. Underlying the good news is the continuing importance of making sure that adults, especially in segments of the population still living outside of the reach of most health care systems, are screened, offered B vaccination, educated about risks, and tested as necessary.

The ADA Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Toolkit is meant to assist healthcare professionals in educating patients on topics related to diabetic cardiovascular disease. The toolkit offers handouts in both English and Spanish.
We would like to draw your attention to a new Self-Management Support resource. The Assessment of Primary Care Resources and Supports for Chronic Disease Self Management (PCRS) is a tool developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Diabetes Initiative to further define the elements of self management support in primary care. Its purpose is to facilitate quality improvement in this component of the chronic care model. Also available is a PowerPoint presentation that provides some background and information on how to use and score the PCRS Tool. Shots 2007 is a quick reference guide to the Immunization Schedules, a collaboration of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the 2006-2007 Adult Immunization Schedule, recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
Acanthosis nigricans is a darkening of the skin, usually around the neck but sometimes on knuckles, elbows or toes or around the armpits or the groin. Having acanthosis nigricans can a warning sign that a person is at risk for diabetes. This patient education brochure explains basic information about acanthosis nigricans in English and Spanish.

The Health Disparities Collaboratives (HDC), through HRSA - Health Resources and Services Administration, is an integrated and collaborative national effort to eliminate disparities and improve delivery systems of healthcare to all individuals living in the United States under the care of HRSA-supported Health Centers. The Management and treatment of depression is one of the HDC topics.

Provides scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs.
NHSC grants matching funds directly to States to operate their own loan repayment programs. Primary care health professionals who are providing full-time clinical services in a public or non-profit facility located in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area are eligible for this program.
Provides health professions students and residents with opportunities to work on interdisciplinary health care teams. Currently, 21 states and U.S. territories offer SEARCH programs, extending a unique, hands-on, primary care training experience working with people in underserved rural and urban areas.
Agenda includes expanding access to quality health care, increasing opportunities in medical education, cultural competence, and research for Latinos. Another focus is policy development and education efforts focused on eliminating health disparities faced by Latinos.

The Texas Diabetes Council offers the Diabetes Tool Kit—a teaching aid for health care professionals who work with people who have diabetes. The Tool Kit includes patient education handouts in English and Spanish, which can be reproduced. The handouts address managing sick days, monitoring diabetes in pregnancy, developing an exercise program, and other important topics.
This site contains free health education materials in a number of languages and a variety of formats. They are being developed to study the value of these formats in providing health information for diverse populations in a variety of settings.
